Biography
Simon was first introduced to
yoga at age six learning breath retentions from his
father, then the main bandhas from Basil Brown (an
Olympic athlete). At age 17, a Tibetan Lama introduced
Simon to tantric yoga. In 1980, Simon started the
physical practice of hatha yoga eventually learning with
BKS Iyengar, K. Pattabhi Jois and TKV Desikachar. Simon
commenced teaching in 1982 and met his main teacher
Natanaga Zhander in 1985. Then in 1988, Simon met
physiotherapist yoga teacher Bianca Machliss. Together
Simon and Bianca have developed the unique YogaSynergy
system. YogaSynergy is intelligently designed in
accordance with the principles of applied anatomy and
physiology, but it can also be dynamic, graceful and
fluid. Since 1995 Simon has been teaching courses in the
Applied Anatomy and Physiology of Yoga throughout the
world. Simon is co-author of ‘Applied Anatomy and
Physiology of Yoga’, which is the main text book
for a course he developed and lectures in at RMIT
University (Melbourne). Visit YogaSynery at www.yogasynergy.com.au.
Conference Sessions
Stilling and
cleansing body, breath and mind in dynamic meditation
with YogaSynergy
Friday, 17 April /
3.30pm-5.00pm
In this presentation, Simon
Borg-Olivier, a research scientist and physiotherapist
who has practiced yoga for 40 years, describes how to
increase your fitness and be able to do more while your
heart and lungs work less. YogaSynergy is traditional
hatha yoga with an understanding from exercise-based
physiotherapy that can make your whole body function in
the same way that the heart does. This allows you to do
strenuous activities while remaining calm and relaxed.
With concentration that eventually leads to the
meditative state you can use precise movements and
postures to create regions of compression and
expansion within the body. Then using the same pumping
principle the heart uses, the whole body can circulate
and pump blood while the heart itself can stay
calm.
Energising, Strengthening and Calming the Body with
YogaSynergy
Saturday, 18 April /
2.00pm-3.30pm
In this presentation, Yoga
Master Simon Borg-Olivier describes ways to energise and
strengthen the body while remaining calm with
YogaSynergy. Simon explains how it is possible to use a
special type of core stabilisation for the whole body
that can stabilise and nourish your joints and muscles,
prevent and heal injuries, and relieve physical pain.
This practice allows you to remain calm by using
diaphragmatic breathing into an abdomen firmed through
posture. Simon demonstrates simple and advanced
YogaSynergy techniques that help improve the digestion of
food, absorption of nutrients, elimination of waste and
stored toxins, and the health of the reproductive
system.
Dynamic Rejuvenation and Relaxation with
YogaSynergy
Sunday, 19 April /
10.30am-12.00pm
In this presentation, Simon
Borg-Olivier MScBAppSc (Physiotherapy) outlines the four
main reasons we generally need so much sleep and food. He
will describe and demonstrate five important techniques
and practices that can rejuvenate you by improving
circulation while simultaneous inducing relaxation of
nerves and muscles, thus reducing your need for sleep and
food. These techniques can also be very useful in the
relief of pain in any part of the body. Simon will give
an artistic display of advanced YogaSynergy looks very
energetic but actually gathers energy and has the same
effect as healing sleep and food.
